Ranchi, The Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Government of Jharkhand, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB), and Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED) jointly launched a ten-day-long state-wide public campaign today, which will continue as a run-up to the World Environment Day event on 5 June 2024. The key purpose of the campaign is to increase mass awareness on the thematic issue of accelerating land restoration, drought resilience, and halting desertification in alignment with the sustainable lifestyle actions of Mission LiFE to forge a sense of responsibility towards the environment and society.
The campaign's inception saw a burst of creativity as farmers and women's self-help groups in the city’s outskirt engaged in a captivating hand-printed art activity, pledge, digging of organic compost, and plantation symbolizing the very essence of land restoration. Considering Jharkhand's status as one of the climate-vulnerable regions, grappling with recurrent drought, rapid rate of land desertification and degradation, this year's World Environment Day theme holds particular significance. It serves as a rallying call for collective action towards addressing these pressing issues for a greener future.
Dr. Sanjay Srivastava, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HOFF), Government of Jharkhand emphasized the profound impact of social responsibility, rallying individuals to contribute to the theme of ‘Our Land, Our Future, We are #Generation Restoration’ in letter and spirit. He further added that an array of engaging public activities across the state is planned, which aim to empower citizens to become catalysts for change.
From social media engagements to initiatives on the ground, pledges to signature drives, street play to awareness camp, from green fashion shows to painting competitions, a multitude of innovative public engagement initiatives will unfold across government departments, urban local bodies, parks, and public spaces, galvanizing communities across the state.
Shri Shashikar Samanta, IFS, Chairman of JSPCB, highlighted the transformative potential of the campaign, stressing the importance of a collaborative, solution-driven approach to address pressing environmental challenges.
Shri Ramapati Kumar, CEO of CEED, echoed this sentiment, underlining the pivotal role of active citizen involvement in fostering localized environmental solutions. He drew inspiration from Jharkhand's rich cultural heritage of nature conservation, advocating for sustainable living practices.
With widespread endorsement from civic bodies, civil society organizations, educational institutions, and media outlets, this campaign stands poised to ignite a statewide movement for environmental stewardship and lasting change.
